Tibetan Oracle with 4-sided Dice

This Tibetan Oracle dating from the twelfth century AD uses bar-shaped 4-sided dice using with the Tibetan letters Ah, Da, Va and Ya. The die is thrown three times and the corresponding text read.

Ah stands for Agni, the god of fire, mediator between men and the gods. Fire brings warmth and life to all beings.

Da stands for Indra, the warrior king of the gods. He symbolises the stability and strength of the earth.

Va stands for Varuna, the god of water. Water brings cohesion and also harmony.


Ya stands for Yama, god of death. He symbolises wind, or the movement of air, which pervades the body as prana.
